Centenary Commemorations

The ongoing Centenary of World War One was remembered across the country between 2014 and 2018.

Whittlesey Museum carried out the following Centenary activities:

  • Laid the Whittlesey Museum Wreath for the Somme Offensive at Thiepval on 1st July 2016, during the Centenary Commemoration event for the Battle of the Somme.
  • Laid the Whittlesey Museum Wreath for Passchendaele at Passchendaele on 31st July 2017, during the Centenary Commemoration event.
  • Created the Whittlesey Museum Memorial Wreath with 244 poppies symbolising the 244 men from Whittlesey, Kings Dyke, Eastrea, Coates, Pondersbridge and Turves who died as a result of the war.
  • Created this online resource to help local people research their family history and learn more about the impact of WW1 on the area,
