Home Front

The effects of war were felt at home as well as at the Front. Every street contained families waiting to hear news of their relatives, women raising children with their husbands away, missing or dead, women and older children taking up new work such as farm labour which still needed doing whilst the men were unavailable, and so on. Even in the later days of the war with conscription of adult men to fight, there were also able-bodied men who were exempted from joining the army because their specialist skills were still required at home – a position which undoubtedly saved some lives but was often treated with suspicion and resentment from others who had lost relatives or feared that they might do soon.
